Crimea Prepares for Referendum

A defiant Russia stood alone on Saturday. As it cast the sole “veto” against a U-N Security Council resolution on Crimea. The draft resolution declared Sunday’s referendum  invalid. CCTV’s Liling Tan reports.

The southern Crimea region is gearing up for a Sunday referendum on breaking away from Ukraine and joining Russia.  International policymakers are calling the vote unconstitutional.  In Kiev, the government says it will not recognize any outcome.Pro-Russian leaders in Crimea are making final preparations for Sunday’s controversial referendum that could see it annex and join neighboring Russia.  CCTV’s Andy Saputra has more on the mood in the capital of Kiev which dismisses the vote as illegal.

The threat of sanctions hangs over Russia because Europe and the United States see Crimea’s vote as illegal. CCTV’s Anand Naidoo speaks with William Pomeranz, an expert in Russian affairs at the Woodrow Wilson Center, and he explains why this vote is seen as “illegitimate”.
